What is BEAM? beam - northern ontario

Muskoka Community Network’s Broadband for E-Business and Marketing (BEAM) program helps small- and medium-sized businesses understand the importance of e-business. E-Business is the use of the Internet or any related technology to assist in your normal business operations.

BEAM is available for a limited time and funding is limited.

BEAM provides the following:

  • Financial support.

With the support of FedNor, MCN supports Eligible Recipients access up to 75% of the cost to design, develop and implement a new or existing website, content, mobile applications and operational business applications. This contribution is limited to $5,000.

  • Education.

Gained through defining your e-business goals in the application. By working with your chosen vendor to establish your web presence or through adding e-business tools to your current website, you will further your understanding of how e-business can increase your sales and improve business efficiency.

Before you submit your application, here are a few details you will need to know.

Eligibility:

Contributions are only provided to qualifying small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within Almaguin, Muskoka and Parry Sound.

Eligible SMEs include:

  • those operating on a full-time basis, with a valid BIN number;
  • seasonal businesses, such as tourism operations;

Ineligible SMEs include: 

  • not-for-profit organizations;
  • hobby businesses;
  • towns, townships, villages, municipalities;
  • those that have no reasonable prospect of being sustainable.

Applicants may receive a contribution of up to 75% of their total eligible costs to a total of $5,000. Applicants fall in to one of the following categories:

  • having never participated in the BEAM program before;
  • having previously received a contribution less than $5,000;
  • having previously received a contribution totaling $5,000 and are therefore not eligible for further contributions for a three (3) year period from the approval date of your most recent BEAM project.

Successful Applicants will be required to sign a Contribution Agreement with MCN.

BEAM Steps:

  1. Complete the online orientation available at www.mcnet.ca/orientation.
  2. Submit a BEAM application online/email/fax/mail or in person.
  3. Once the application is submitted the BEAM Project Officer will contact you and let you know if there is anything else that needs to be submitted in order for your application to be complete.
  4. Upon completion of the application and all the requirements are met, an approval letter and contribution agreement will be issued to the applicant.
  5. Once you have your approval letter and contribution agreement, read it over and submit the signed agreement (page 6). You have 30 days to complete the orientation and return the signed agreement.
  6. You have 90 days to complete your project from the day you submit your signed contribution agreement, up to a maximum of 120 days.
  7. When your BEAM project is complete, submit appendix B,C and D from your contribution agreement, all invoices and proof of payment in the form of cleared cheque/credit card statement/e-transfer confirmation/PayPal payment confirmation to beam@mcnet.ca.
  8. The BEAM project officer will review the documentation and the website to ensure the work quoted is completed and that everything is in order. Once complete, you will be sent an email money transfer to the email address provided when the application was submitted unless otherwise noted.

What benefits does BEAM program provide you with?

Not only will you receive a financial contribution up to 75% of the cost to a maximum of $5000, the BEAM Project Officer will guide you through the process, provide you with feedback as well as give you a second set of eyes when reviewing your BEAM project once it is complete. MCN validates completed work against the quote(s) submitted prior to issuing payment and will request that missing items be completed. Please note:

• Please note that work MUST not begin until the applicant has been issued an approval letter and contribution agreement. Any payments made before the date on the agreement will not be reimbursed.
• Quotes submitted must be dated within the last 12 months.
• All inquiries in regards to specific BEAM projects must come from the BEAM applicant, NOT the developer.
• If you encounter problems while completing your BEAM project, please inform MCN as soon as possible, we are here to help.

Local Web Developers:

Northern Ontario vendors (as defined at the federal level) are preferred. Applicants who use Northern Ontario vendors will be eligible to receive up to 75% of eligible project costs. This contribution is limited to $5,000.

Applicants who choose to use developers outside of Northern Ontario will only be eligible to receive up to 65% funding of eligible projects costs. This contribution is limited to $5,000.

Applicants must provide a minimum of two quotes from different vendors in their application. View web developers in the region.

What costs does BEAM support?

The design, development and implementation costs of creating or upgrading a website, content, mobile applications and operational business applications.

Are there any costs not supported?

Ongoing costs such as web hosting, domain name and monthly maintenance are not supported. Any annual or monthly fees are not eligible under BEAM. BEAM does not cover HST charges.
Eligible Recipients must receive an Approval Letter prior to completing any work. Work completed before an Approval Letter is sent will not be covered.
